Reciting Surah al-Fatiha in Funeral prayer?
Some people often criticize Hanafi Muslims for not reciting Surah al- Fatiha in funeral prayers.
Let them talk against Ibn Umar (ra) then.
َحَدَّثَنِي عَنْ مَالِكٍ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ، كَانَ لاَ يَقْرَأُ فِي الصَّلاَةِ عَلَى الْجَنَازَةِ .
Translation: Abdullah Ibn Umar (RA) did not recite (Fatiha or any surah) in funeral prayer. (Muwatta Imam Malik # 537)
In Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah It is proven from many other Sahaba and Tabiyeen not to recite Fatiha in funeral prayer.
This is why Imam at- Tirmidhi (rah) after narrating a hadith which is on reciting Fatiha, said:
وَقَالَ بَعْضُ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ لاَ يُقْرَأُ فِي الصَّلاَةِ عَلَى الْجَنَازَةِ إِنَّمَا هُوَ ثَنَاءٌ عَلَى اللَّهِ وَالصَّلاَةُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَالدُّعَاءُ لِلْمَيِّتِ . وَهُوَ قَوْلُ الثَّوْرِيِّ وَغَيْرِهِ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكُوفَةِ
Translation: ...Some people of knowledge said that one should not recite (Fatiha) in prayer of funeral. It consists of praise of Allah, sending peace and blessings upon Prophet (Peace be upon him), and making Dua for the dead. This is the saying of Sufyan ath- Thawri (rah) and others from people of Kufa (i.e. Ahnaaf).
